downstairs, and preparing to head back to California next weekend for my annual 10-day summer meditation retreat, I honestly wasn’t sure I’d be hosting this month's Full Moon Circle on the beach.

The air conditioner is fixed, we’re working through the water damage, and the truth is, life keeps rolling on.

This month’s Full Moon feels like an invitation to pause and ask: Am I creating a life I’m also able to enjoy?

I’ve spent years discovering that a beautiful life isn’t measured only by what we accomplish. It’s also reflected in how we care for ourselves, how we meet life’s challenges, and whether we can stay connected to ourselves in the middle of it all.

One of the greatest gifts of the inner work I’ve done over the years is that I don’t have to wait for life to become calm before I can enjoy it. I can weather the waves without being consumed by them. The circumstances don’t always change as quickly as I’d like, but my relationship to them has changed. That has made all the difference.

So I’ve decided we’re gathering after all.

This month’s Full Moon Circle will be intentionally small, limited to just 10 women, creating space for us to connect more personally and explore what this powerful Full Moon and the current astrology may be inviting each of us into.

In the spirit of community, your registration includes you and the option to bring one guest. If there’s someone in your life who could use an evening to exhale, reconnect, and be held in this space, I’d be honored to welcome her too.

If this is calling to you, I’d love to have you join us.

Reserve your spot here

Whether you’re joining us on Plum Island or reading this from somewhere far away, my hope is the same.

I hope you give yourself a little space under this Full Moon to pause, exhale, and notice what you’re ready to release. Life doesn’t stop asking things of us, but we can choose how we meet it. Sometimes that’s the greatest shift of all.

If you’re local to Massachusetts or New England, I’d love to welcome you on Monday evening. And if you’re not, I hope you’ll come visit us someday. There’s something incredibly special about gathering on the beach beneath the moon, and I’d love to share that experience with you when the time is right.

Warmly,
Maureen
<div They’re often things we’ve grown up with, rules that society has set for us that become an unconscious part of our daily lives.

We see others doing the same thing, following the same rules. Usually our families have the same beliefs and follow these rules too, so there’s very little space to question them.

So many of the high-functioning women I work with have been taught to do, to achieve, and to multitask. We’ve learned that we’re rewarded for it. It’s as if our value comes from what we do rather than who we are.

This pattern creates a way of operating that is actually very different from a more feminine way of being. When you think about it, if you’re a mother raising children, you definitely have a lot to do. But the way you meet and hold your child often comes from a place of softness. If they’re crying or sick, we instinctively know how to hold them. For some women this may feel harder, particularly if they didn’t have those qualities modeled for them, but many of these qualities are natural expressions of a more feminine flow.

And yet in our patriarchal society, we are expected to operate in ways that don’t always align with our true nature. As a result, we often end up depleted, exhausted, and carrying a to-do list a mile long.

In my latest podcast, “When It Feels Like Things Aren’t Moving Fast Enough...”, I speak about this exact pattern. I talk about the ingrained approach of effort, trying, pushing, and grasping. It is a way of getting things done, but it takes a lot out of you.

There is another way.

A way with more flow, pleasure, and ease.

A way of being that many of us have become disconnected from through the pressures of society and the unconscious rules we’ve learned to follow.

Click here to listen to the full podcast episode, it's less than 10 minutes in the spirit of getting to the point and accessing your flow and pleasure.

I'd love to hear what resonates with you after listening.

If you'd like more conversations like this, subscribe below.

When it feels like things aren't moving fast enough...

What happens when you’re doing everything right and you still feel like things aren’t moving quickly enough?

Maureen Magauran, M.D.

What happens when you’re doing everything right and you still feel like things aren’t moving quickly enough?

In this episode, we explore a pattern I see often in high-achieving women and the surprising results that can happen when we loosen our grip even just a little.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated by how slowly something seems to be unfolding, this conversation is for you.

What topics are you curious about? I was still breastfeeding, though I had already started feeling ready to wean. I had signed up for a 10-day meditation retreat in California, and as the date got closer, I felt more and more nervous. It was the first time I had been away from him for more than a day, and it felt incredibly emotional.

I felt so much guilt and conflict around taking time for myself. Part of me worried, what if something happened to me while I was away? Was I a bad mom for leaving?

I cried leaving for the airport.
I cried on the flight.
And I cried when I got there.

But another part of me knew I needed space to hear myself again outside of constantly caring for everyone else.

At that point in my life, I was working as a psychiatrist, raising young kids, holding a lot emotionally, and quietly wrestling with big questions about the direction of my work and life.

I think one of the biggest things I realized during that retreat was how much I had been living on automatic pilot.

I was taking care of everyone, working, parenting, moving through life, but I hadn’t fully acknowledged how much anxiety and pressure I was actually carrying inside myself.

So much shifted during that retreat.

Not just mentally, but in how I felt in my body, my energy, and my connection to life itself. I felt more present. More alive. More connected spiritually. More open. I laughed more easily. And honestly, one of the best parts was being that version of myself at home with my family.

That retreat became the beginning of what eventually evolved into my holistic psychiatry practice and later the embodiment and energy work I guide women through today.

The retreat changed the direction of my life

This is a huge part of why I love creating spaces like my monthly moon circles on the beach and The Exhale Retreat.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" ridiculous this all is.

How we’ve been sold this false belief that we’re not beautiful enough as we are, without doing all this extra work.

Yes, my hair looks great after getting it blowdried, but if I wasn’t looking at a mirror, I wouldn’t even know.

Beauty is an internal feeling and belief.

The thing to really ask yourself is:

“What if I knew and trusted how beautiful I am, exactly as I am, without having to change a thing?”

What if you unconditionally loved yourself?

We have been taught to measure ourselves from the outside, and nothing decreases pleasure more than that. It takes us outside ourselves and leaves us looking for approval, for love, etc.

Obviously as a child we are dependent on our parents in life-sustaining ways. We look to them for love and a reflection of who we are. Their reflection is often distorted by their own experiences and lack of love or reflection- their conditionality.

But as we grow up, it becomes our responsibility to source these things from within. I’ll admit, it’s not always an easy thing at first. I remember asking myself “How am I supposed to love myself?”

What I’ve learned is that I love myself by going back inside. By being present for myself and paying attention to what’s happening, to what I feel, what I need, and what’s happening. I also get support when I need or want it because we don’t have to do it alone.
As humans we are wired for connection.
As spiritual beings at our core, we are connection.

There is a whole world of the Divine, of Spirit, God, however you choose to call it that’s here and loves us unconditionally. Learning to tap into this is way more important than how your hair looks, or the glance from some random guy. Who cares about that really? It’s a distraction, fluff, not the real thing at all.

How different would life feel if you felt unconditionally loved? What would you do differently? What would you stop doing?

The times are clearly changing. The old ways of automatically doing things are disintegrating. People are waking up and there is a choice in that.

Deconstruction can feel uncomfortable or disarming, but truly it is a gift.

It all starts with an exhale, a letting go. Today is the full moon in Scorpio, the release is happening as I type.

Can you release the self criticism, judgement and see it as a way of being controlled? Instead what would your morning, or day, or year look like when you come from a place of unconditional love for yourself? Feeling supported, feeling lighter.

Truly, I’d love to hear what it would look like or feel like for you!

Wishing you a beautiful day full of connection and love.

Signing off with a deep exhale and a bow to your presence.

Love,
Maureen

<p class="button-wrapper" Emotions can become repressed when there’s no outlet or way to to express them, creating an energetic blockage and backup that leads to feeling stuck. This can manifest as physical problems or the emotional sense of hopelessness and despair.

This simpler model I am sharing of depression and how it can evolve helps with healing.

Emotions are an energy that wants to move. If it is not expressed, it gets held inside us. There may have been times in your life that you didn’t have the support to let them move, or you felt completely overwhelmed by them, so you had no choice but to suppress them. This suppression can show up in all sorts of ways with something as simple as a sore throat or myriad physical disorders. Quite often in my clients depression manifests itself as a certain stickiness or a feeling of dread or something they don’t want to look at. There is often a sense of loss and hopelessness.

The biggest obstacle is a fear of the emotion, that it will never end, that it will overwhelm you again, that you will never stop crying, that you will be forever left with this painful feeling.

I point out a horror movie analogy and let my clients know that they are not alone in this thinking. When you watch a horror movie and you hear the creepy music playing as the young girl opens the cellar door and in your mind you yell “Stop, don’t go there, you will get killed!” This is similar to how the emotional blockage sounds in your head, telling you “Don’t go there, it will hurt too much, it was so painful. It’s so scary!”

But you are not in a horror movie, you are safe in your house or my office sitting on a couch. There is no threat to you right now, you are safe. Now is the perfect time to learn to let your emotions move, to free yourself from the grip of an old experience.

You can feel what is beyond your fear or sadness that has been suppressed just below the surface for possibly decades.

It’s important to see the power you give to fear when you let the fear of the unknown take over. And it is important to challenge that fear and to let things change and move. As FDR said in his famous inaugural speech “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

I guide my clients by reminding them that the fear of the unknown is always worse than the known. When you open to the possibility of being with the pain and sadness from old experiences, it may very well feel very different now than it did in the past. It helps to do this in a supportive environment, with someone you know and trust and feel safe.

This repeated going back to check with with the emotions in a safe space, allows the emotions to start to move again. This brings with it a feeling of lightness and relief as the old energy of fear and sadness can move out.

And the surprise that comes when you do this is most often a beautiful thing. You start to feel more. As the sadness and fear move out and make room you begin to feel other things like love and joy.

When we block one part of our emotions, we block them all.

You can see that your previous constant state of fear and sadness, even when it is held below the surface or in the background is depressing and zaps your life force and energy. Just as you may feel the heaviness and sadness, let yourself make room for the lightness and joy that is also part of who you are.

Give yourself the gift of experiencing this in your own body.

I created a guided meditation called Slowing Down Time to help you safely reconnect with what you’ve been holding, and begin to let it move.

This is the first step in the deeper work I do with high-achieving women ready to feel, lead, and live differently.

You can access it here.

This article was originally posted on Thrive Global.

Dr. Maureen Magauran is an embodied leadership coach and Yale-educated holistic psychiatrist. At the time we had no idea because they didn’t seem that sick, and the world was getting crazy. My son lost his sense of smell, but at the time no one knew that meant anything.

He then went on to develop all kinds of symptoms, that were attributed to anxiety or ADHD or the stress of asynchronous online school and the lockdown. It took many months, close to a year to get the actual diagnosis, and the diagnosis didn’t really help because medicine didn’t know how to treat it.

You may not have heard of PANS and PANDAS, or maybe you have. It’s a really difficult autoimmune illness that affects kids suddenly and has devastating impacts on their behavior and how they feel.

PANS stands for Pediatric Acute Neuropsychiatric Syndrome and PANDAS is Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infection. Essentially these illnesses are often mistaken for psychiatric disorders, but they are caused by infections and other factors that a depressed immune system can’t contain. A big part of treatment is finding and treating the appropriate infections, while strengthening the immune system.

In late 2024 PANS and PANDAS were officially recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, but the understanding and treatment has a long way to go. A lot of kids and families are suffering and trying to figure out the best path forward for health and healing.

Because of my training in psychiatry, meditation and energy work, it has helped me tremendously to hold a solid space for my kids and family to navigate the complexities of the illness and to be able to hold and handle the intense fight or flight that is one of the characteristic pieces of this illness.

I’m running a free class for Moms of kids with PANS and PANDAS to share these tools and to help these Moms feel supported and connected to others. I know how hard it is.

If you are a Mom of kids with PANS or PANDAS, or you know other Moms going through it, please share this link with them. If you are in any groups with other Moms, please share as well. It can feel devastating and isolating to not have support when your kids are struggling.

Here is the link with more information and to share with other Moms.
https://maureenmagauran.com/moms-pans-pandas. There were twelve kids in thirteen years, same parents.

So there was a lot of chaos… but it was a fun kind of chaos.

People always ask me what it was like growing up with that many siblings, and I always say I don’t really know, because that’s all I knew. There was always someone around, always something happening, always someone to talk to or play with.

I do remember trying to find space sometimes. I would go sit in my closet, this tiny little closet, just to have a moment to myself. But for the most part, it was full. Full of life, full of people.

My father was a doctor. He emigrated from Ireland and built a family medicine practice attached to our house. So growing up, medicine was a big part of our life. The nurses and staff felt like family. Patients would sometimes show up at our front door on the weekends.

It was that kind of medicine. Very personal. Very connected.

And I loved it.

I really admired the way my father practiced. He knew and cared for people, and for their families. It was meaningful work, with deep human connections that mattered.

My father always encouraged me and my siblings to go into medicine. In fact 8 of us did!

I went to Yale for undergrad, and since I have dual citizenship, I had the chance to study medicine in Dublin. And honestly, that was one of the best experiences of my life. I loved living in another country, being in a different culture. Everyone thought I was Irish, (not American Irish,) and it was easy for me to pick up the brogue.

Most people had no idea I was American. It was a fun chance to start over, and feel how that felt, in a new country where no one knew me. I wasn’t defined by the way I grew up or things I had done. It was very freeing.

In medical school I was drawn to psychiatry because I thought it was fascinating that you could change how you feel by changing how you think. It felt like a powerful way to help people.

But when I started my psychiatry training in Boston, I quickly realized that most of it was focused on medication. That was the first moment something didn’t feel right.

I didn’t want to just prescribe medication.
I wanted to help people look beyond their symptoms and diagnoses.

To help them understand themselves in a deeper way, instead of just managing what was happening on the surface.

So after I completed my four years of psychiatry training, I opened my own private practice. I was doing therapy and some medication management.

And I started to burn out.

I used to joke that I felt like a Pez dispenser. People would come in, open their mouth, I’d give them a prescription, and say “See you in three months.”

It didn’t feel meaningful. So I leaned more into therapy. But even then, there was something missing.

People would say, “I’ve already talked about this, and it hasn’t changed.”

And I agreed with them. They were right. I knew that this work needed to go deeper.

Around that time, I got pregnant with my first son and stepped away from my practice to be home with my kids. I really questioned whether I wanted to go back at all. It just didn’t feel aligned anymore.

During that time I discovered meditation and energy work. It had a big impact on me and became my passion. I went to courses and found a specific energetic process that I worked with consistently, receiving sessions, practicing it myself.

The changes I felt were profound. I felt calmer, more clear and I felt more like myself than I had in a long time. The practices were so helpful that I realized that this was the missing link for my work.

I decided to go back to work, but now calling it Holistic Psychiatry, using meditation and energy work with my clients, alongside therapy and minimal medication management.

The women I worked with responded immediately and really well. The women who were drawn to my work were interested in a holistic approach and wanted to avoid medications if possible. Those that were already on meds, as they did this deeper energetic work, felt so much better that they no longer needed them.

Over time, I started to feel confined in medicine and I knew that I wanted to help women go beyond feeling better, beyond managing symptoms.

It wasn’t just about understanding themselves or even knowing what they wanted.

I wanted them to actually move toward it, to bring their dreams into their real lives.

I wanted to help them step into the fullness of who they really are, beyond the perceived limitations, to help them connect to something greater, to feel more support and meaning, and to have a deeper spiritual connection to themselves.

This wasn’t just about healing. It was about living in a completely different way.

This work had changed my life and was changing my clients’ lives.

At the same time that I was stepping into this work in a new way, my youngest sister died suddenly. She was 43. I had just seen her a few days before at Christmas.

It was a shock, so hard to wrap my head around. It made no sense.

Everything shifted. My priorities, how I spent my time, how I saw life. So many things seemed irrelevant when faced with death and the loss of a loved one, especially in a way that felt out of the blue.

At that point, I had already been studying meditation for almost ten years, and even before that I had studied death from an eastern perspective. So when my sister died, I leaned into doing some practices related to death and the afterlife journey.

What I experienced surprised me. I could feel her. I could feel her presence in a way that was beyond anything I expected. I had expected to feel blackness, pain, separation, but instead I felt her fullness. It was like seeing her without the weight of the world. There even was a sense of joy, which made no sense to my head at the time, but I felt the joy and there was no denying it. I could feel how held she was in the afterlife. It’s where we come from, after all. And where we will return. No one gets away without that, as much as our society tries to ignore it.

The experience was so powerful. It brought a deep sense of healing to my heart that I wanted to share with others. I began giving talks and wrote an article called Death is Not the End. I spoke in front of hundreds of people about her, about my experience, and about what I felt in the energetic and spiritual dimension of death.

That, for me, was the true turning point. It was the moment I knew I was being called beyond medicine and psychiatry, into helping people open to spirituality and energy work in a deeper way.

Now, my work as an Embodied Leadership and Energy Coach is a blend of everything I’ve lived and trained in: psychiatry, therapy, meditation, energy work, somatics.

This is the foundation of what I now call the Embodied Energy Method™.

At its core, it’s about helping women reconnect to who they really are. It’s helping them clear what isn’t truly them. And helping them build a solid energetic center so they feel steady, supported, and able to hold what their life is asking of them.

Not only does this help them step into more visibility, more leadership, more presence, but it feels deeply supportive.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Over the last year I’ve been hosting full moon ceremonies on the beach, incorporating the energy of the full moon with somatic practices to help women feel more grounded and clear. I’ve also been running weekend retreats on Plum Island in Massachusetts to help women feel more deeply nourished in their lives and leadership.

I also offer 1:1 work with women individually, where we go deeper into this process so they can clear what isn’t truly them, strengthen their energetic body, and live and lead from a place that feels steady, supported, and fully their own.

This is the work that changes everything.

Not only do the women feel more calm and clear, but when you feel held and connected to something deeper, so much more becomes possible. It feels easier and more fun to share your ideas, to engage and connect with people in more meaningful ways, and to fully step into your life and leadership.

It becomes more about enjoying the life you’ve created while being a part of something bigger, for others and ultimately for humanity.

This is spiritual awakening.

<picture></picture>

Thanks for reading Embodied Energy! There’s actually an entire way of doing that. There’s a way of working with your own energy, your own subtle bodies, to strengthen them from the inside out.

It’s kind of like clearing away the cobwebs, the debris of things that are false selves, that are patterns, that are things that you’ve learned and you’ve brought into this world, including past lives, that can color your view of life and your experiences.

When you’re able to see these false pieces, when you can integrate and clear them, you can more easily simply align with who you really are. Your spirit has incarnated into this world, and when you can connect to it more fully, it feels really good and really natural.

I just got off a call with a client where we were looking at the parts of her energy and herself that are very holding. Many women are familiar with holding. We do it all the time. It’s something we’re taught to do, and expected to do.

There’s a true art to it in terms of holding things where you’re actually being held yourself, like a circle that feeds itself. As your energetic body is strengthened from the inside, it actually holds and supports you.

You have a solid energetic center that you’re resting on, that you’re coming from, and you’re also receiving from the vastness of spirit, from your own Highest Self.

From here, things feel more clear. Things feel good.

You feel the sense of being nourished.

You feel the sense of fun and play and lightness, and you’re really separated from those heavier things, which are energetic imprints. These may be sabotaging, getting in the way, sort of getting you to look at things from a certain angle that can distort things and can make you feel bad.

This work of the energetic body building is the key.

It is what I work with my clients to help them do that from the inside out, so that you are simply yourself in a way that feels good. It feels nourishing and has no charge.

It’s easier to do things from here, to be yourself and to be really clear on what is in integrity for you.

It’s much simpler.

If this resonates, this is the work I do with my clients.

You’re welcome to book a free 30-minute Clarity Call.
We’ll identify the shift that will make the biggest difference in your life and business, and see if working together feels aligned.

Book a time to connect.

Thanks for reading Maureen's Substack!
